I tried sopes for the first time tonight! One al pastor (marinated pork) and one with nopales. They were SO good! Here's my plate - sope al pastor, sope con nopales, and chorizo taco (hopefully I'm saying all this right!): Spoiler: click to toggle

I love nopales! Nopales al ajillo is one of my favorite Mexican dishes. |

Oh I am SO jealous of you guys who have easy access to Mexican food. I still have to pay $7 for 1kg of masa harina from the one and only store in my town that sells it. I found some achiote paste in the store too! I made tacos al pastor a while ago and nearly cried. They were soooo goooood. Australia is finally cottoning on to the awesome that is proper Mexican food (rather than packet Tex-Mex tacos, though those definitely also have a place in my heart). They FINALLY sell jars of salsa verde in some grocery stores now (though they call it something else). I've never been a huge fan of Mexican lollies, but cajeta en obleas were the BEST. |

I am absolutely spoiled rotten by the Mexican food here. Within a few blocks of me, there are at least 2 trucks, 4 restaurants, and 2 bakeries, plus we have paleta, elote, and chicharrón vendors in the summer time. I'm going to try to make it down to Chicago sometime soon though to go get poblana food! They have a cemita place that I want to check out. |

Any advice for a girl going to a rural area of Mexico this summer? (and how to deal with the response of, "YOU'RE GOING WHERE? THAT'S A BAD PLACE! CARTELS!) |

Show them how big Mexico is on a map, and ignore it. I made a video about this for a class last year. I can't find it rn, but I'll post it if I do. Where are you going? Edited by mburucuja, Thu Apr 23, 2015 7:54 pm.

Nice! A lot of Oaxaca state is really beautiful. I make a lot of distance comparisons to the US. Like, OK. Say part of Nuevo Laredo is legitimately dangerous and you're gonna be in Juchitán. That's 19 hours driving (about 1,140 miles), according to google. That'd be like staying away from Ohio because of something happening in Miami! |

I do the same thing when explaining Turkey and the problems in Syria and Iraq! "Turkey is the size of Texas so it's like not going to Oklahoma because of violence on the border with Mexico, but people have no problem even with places near the border like San Antonio and San Diego." It seems to get the point across well in my experience. Edited by Matsunoki, Fri Apr 24, 2015 7:22 pm.
