I do that for Turkey too! I guess I just have a knack for picking countries that scare people. haha

But in all honesty, what countries don't scare people? The idea of letting a high schooler/college student live with random people for an extended period of time is a little scary!

HS I get, but not college...I mean, it's a lot less random than living with total strangers in dorms at college.

I heard from my training staff (one of who was a p-sup) that p-sups organize book swaps for their route--so you can get more books too!
^If you'd want to that I'd bring at least one English, I'm bringing one English one Spanish probably

If you're looking for nonfiction that has to do with Mexico, I have a small list cobbled together from class reading lists and used bookstore finds.

El laberinto de la soledad by Octavio Paz (I've only read excerpts, but this is basically the classic Mexican work about Mexico. I've only read in Spanish, but I'm sure it's out there in English.
Mexico Unconquered by John Gibler (written by a journalist, this is an in-depth look at a few moments in recent history.)
Crossing with the Virgin: Stories from the Migrant Trail by Kathryn Ferguson, Norma A. Price, and Ted Parks (Super intense accounts of the border)
Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldúa (A cultural studies classic, this is an unconventional look at the actual border and Chicana identity. Written in English-heavy Spanglish. Part autobiography, part poetry, part culture/history. Excerpts from this were required in like 4 of my college classes.)

I also just recently got Teaching Rebellion: Stories from the Grassroots Mobilization in Oaxaca and I haven't read it yet, but it looks interesting.

Also, one of my favorite bookstores is in Oaxaca. I know you won't be living in the city, but I'm guessing you'll at least pass through. This is where it's at, but it looks like their website isn't working. Big selection in both English and Spanish, most of the books having to do with Latin America in some way.

I miss Oaxaca so much...such an incredibly rich and fascinating culture. and of course, the food was phenomenal.

and mburucuja-- I agree with you about feeling safer in Mexico than in my own town here in the US. I had so many people looking out for me, and I never felt endangered.

I'm glad you had a good experience! Making plans to get back to Mexico or go elsewhere?
